Falaise is the birthplace of William the Conqueror. The castle, dating from the 12th-13th century, is the ancestral seat of the dukes of Normandy.   The restored castle that was nearly leveled in the 2nd world war is well worth a visit.  Especially on Bastille night when there are spectacular fireworks displays.
